Sheeting is coming along. The hard part is now over. Measuring and cutting around the retracts and hatch covers proved to be formidable.

I think with a bit of tweaking here and there it will be good.

Here's the the finished sheet that took me a fair amount of time to carefully measure and cut out.

I am so glad that I spent the time previously to box in the wheel well, it really does give the top sheeting the much needed support.

Some careful measuring and cutting. let's see if it fits...

This second sheet is going to be a bit of a tease to install. Not wanting to to do it in smaller pieces, I decided to do it in one piece.

Ready to install the second sheet, but I first needed to apply the last coat of epoxy paint to the retract wheel wells. Soon as it dries I'll glue the panel in.

Close up of the blocking that will hold the servo access hatch. Four 2-56 cap head screws will secure the hatch to the wing. Note the cutout to access the RDS (Rotary Drive System) set screw...

In preparation for sheeting, I had to run all of the wires in the wing. With flaps. ailerons, retracts and navigational lights to run, the amount of wiring inside is substantial.

The hinge blocking for the flaps and ailerons have all been installed in the wing. I can start on sheeting and closing off the wing now.

The aileron's servo wire is far too short to to reach its exit point. This is a common problem that is easily rectified by just plugging in an extension to its lead. I want to make sure that its electrical connection never separates so I use heat shrink tubing to solve this problem. Here I've slipped a length of heat shrink over the extension wire.

Simply slide the connector somewhere beneath the center point of the heat shrink.

Using a heat gun, shrink the tubing. Some builders use a lighter for this purpose, but I prefer not to use that method, as it can apply too much heat melting the insulation wires beneath.

This is how it should look like completed. Trust me in that this connection worn't separate and it will also be protected from moisture. In the future, should this connection need to be separated, simply slice the heat shrink off...

Servo bracket after glass beading. Wasn't really necessary to do this step, but it sure does make it look purdy!!!

The servo is now in position and as you can see where the drive shaft exits.

The adjustable aluminum servo bracket is held to the plywood mount with four 2-56 blind nuts.

The drive shaft will insert into the coupler and locked into position with the set screw visible. Once I determine the exact spot where the driveshaft will be in relation with the coupler, I will grind a flat spot which will help prevent the drive shaft from rotating inside of the coupler.

I need the epoxy to cure then I can separate the servo from the bracket and remove the drive shaft.

2019/09/09 16:00:40
This is the driveshaft separated from the coupler. The driveshaft is made using a 1/8" stainless rod pressed into a 1/4" diameter brass end that fits into the coupler.

The coupler is secured to the servo with your typical servo screw.

2019/09/09 16:00:34
The drive shaft is connected to the splined servo output shaft through a coupler. At this point I'm trying to determine where the drive shaft will exit the wing's trailing edge.
