You're looking at a close-up of the elevator. I installed a hard point which is in this case is a 5/16" hardwood dowel. I don't see this done enough on planes that I see being built. The purpose of the hard point is to stop the balsa from being crushed when the control horn is tightened down. Not only does it weaken the balsa, but it can change the angle of the horn effecting the geometry.

just slide the eyelet into place. Very easy to do once you know how!

Builder Tip: Here's a tip that you may not be aware of that will save you time and frustration... Installing the servo eyelets has always caused me pain and time until I learned that there was a much easier way.

Got an early start cutting and fitting the servos in the rear tray.

Using a pointed awl, slide the eyelet over the awl and...

I got up early and started on cutting out the openings for the servos.

Spent a considerable time how and where to place the elevator and throttle servos. There are two trays, one being permanent (glued in place) and the other removable (four 4-40 cap head screws)

The tray towards the rear will be epoxied into place, while the front tray will be removable. Templates were made before the permanent 3/32" Birch plywood was cut to fit.

This servo tray that I made is for the rudder pull-pull servo. It will be accessed from an obscure magnetic hatch from the top of the fuse.

I like to mount my servos with four 2-56 x 1/2"cap head screws threaded into blind nuts whenever possible.

Little bit more sanding but it looks pretty good.

Fin and rudder are hinged, ready for a test fit.

It's not glued-up at this point, I think that I'll wait until after the fuselage is covered.

With the wing now in place, I was able to position and epoxy the horizontal stabilizer in place.

I learned a long time ago that there are more precise tools than levels, rulers and such, your eyes. By siting using your eyes, the distance between the bottom of the horizontal stabilizer and the top of each wing panel should be the same.

Before the wing hold-down holes can be drilled, I thought it wise to first install the two 1/4" alignment dowels in the wing's leading edge.

2018/08/15 15:34:15
Here you can see I have carefully located where the two mounting holes needed to be drilled. I used a #21 drill bit. this will accommodate the 10-32 wing bolts after the holes are threaded.

After the tap has cut threads in the block, I take thin CA and wet the newly cut threads to harden them. Once the CA has dried I will re-tap each opening.

The dowels are installed, but not epoxied into place at this time. It is much easier to remove them when covering the wing rather than work around them. After the wing is covered they will be epoxied into place.

The improved wing mount block is epoxied into place. You can see the angles in it to accommodate the wing dihedral.
