With the plans covered with a fresh sheet of waxed paper, one end of each of the two 1/4"x 3/8" x 36" stepped balsa side stringers were beveled to a 45 degree angle. The bevel will allow the side stringers to be spliced to another piece increasing the length. Note that the stepped side is facing outside of the fuselage.
